After mid-summer, this position will convert into a long-term, part-time paralegal clerk trainee position at Lawyer’s Aid Service. As a paralegal clerk trainee, you'll be trained in creating legal documents with FileMaker Pro and MS Word on a Mac as well as liaison work with agencies and courts. You will be helping attorneys all over Texas set up new businesses for their clients as well as drafting, sending out to file, and retrieving legal documents for them.

Typical tasks include speaking with law firm folks, filing, occasional errands to nearby state agencies, copying, emailing, faxing, scanning, and updating reference material.

Pay

$16 an hour

Required

Full-time (40 hours a week) through at least early July.
Strong academics or past experience with trial preparation or real estate valuation

Willingness to support a fragrance free office,
- Lead attorney and others on staff get migraine symptoms from many fragranced products.

Lawyer's Aid Service, Inc., helps Texas attorneys and legal staffs form new businesses, retrieve and file at state agencies, and related services. It’s a small, stable legal service company with about 15 full-timers and part-timers. It’s never had a layoff. About a quarter are students. Flexible schedules

This position is 25-35 hours a week, M-F; during 10:30am-5:30pm or 12:30pm-5:30pm.

Main office near UT campus

Lawyer's Aid Service's office is located in Austin, Texas, at 408 West 17th Street, between Guadalupe and San Antonio. UT and ACC Rio Grande students who work here find it easy to park at work, walk to class, and then walk back to work. (Being a student is not at all required.)

Lawyer's Aid Service, Inc. opened in 1980 to assist attorneys throughout Texas in forming new companies, from creating and filing the formation documents at the state offices to providing services such as retrieving state agency documents creating company outfits, and obtaining Federal EINs.

The work you'll do

Those who succeed best at Lawyer's Aid work enjoy detail-oriented work, helping people over the phone, solving problems, and being accurate. In particular, if you're a person who wants a career in the administrative paralegal area or who simply loves medium-paced and fast-paced office work, we're eager to receive your application.

You'll receive training based on detailed reference guides, starting with the basics and moving up at your own pace.

Most of our staff members are paralegal clerks who email, fax, photocopy, file, and, most importantly, take orders from attorney clients who call in. No sales work is involved.

Our workplace is a floor of ten offices, each with a large window and its own bathroom. You'll be sharing an office with only 1-2 other people, but our staff moves between offices throughout the day, dependent upon the task at hand. The atmosphere is positive and collaborative.

Bookkeeper

Description

In this on-site position you’ll work full-time (at least 32 hours a week) at a legal services firm. You'll be part of a small bookkeeping and accounting team, develop reports, prepare tax returns, perform other bookkeeping tasks, document procedures, and carry many financial duties of operating a small business.

The workplace

Lawyer's Aid Service has about fifteen employees. Of the one-third who are part-time, most are students, and some go on to law school. Half have been here five years or more. It's an educated, friendly workforce.

Our workplace is a ground floor of eight offices with large windows. You'll be sharing an office with only 1-2 other people, but our staff moves between offices throughout the day, dependent upon tasks. We follow pandemic procedures when there’s a Covid alert. The atmosphere is positive and collaborative. An associated law office is six blocks away in West Campus.

Hours

Your hours can be flexible between 8 am to 5:30 pm Mon-Fri.

Starting pay

$24 an hour, possibly more depending on experience.

Requirements

A college degree or at least 1 year of college
Strong academics
Bookkeeping or accounting experience, 2-4 years preferred
Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and Word (our software is AccountEdge)
Ability to clearly document procedures

Preferred qualifications

Bookkeeping experience focused on small business
Accounting classwork or related degree
